2018 for sure has been the year of celebrating African Fabric/ Fashion, all thanks to the film Black Panther. Everyone put in their best foot forward this year at every premiere of the movie to showcase their best African wear loud and proud and boy oh boy, it’s been quite an eventful ride.
Interestingly though, about five years ago, I embarked on a journey to wear more and more Ankara Jackets. For starters, I wasn’t sure I was the right man for these fabrics and always debated whether or not to until one day I challenged myself that you know what, what’s the worst that could happen- try it once and if it doesn’t work, I can say at least I tried.
Fast Forward and Ankara Jackets have become my occasional Wakanda Love. I think the trick has been to find the right fabric that stands out and is eye popping. A trick that works for me, is to have pants that are not as bright as the Jacket. The jacket then, shines on its own having been made from the finest fabric making it then stand out like the King of the Jungle. That is what I love.
To complete this look, I found this amazing plain formal white ruffle shirt. When was the last time you saw or wore a shirt like this? It’s a retro, vintage formal shirt that adds a rich trendy flair twist to the outfit/ look. The purple pants and black LV suede shoes are a great addition to style and finesse to this ensemble. Putting this together was fun. I must point out that be careful not to have pants that will overwhelm and steal the thunder from the Jacket. Let the Jacket and Shirt enjoy the limelight.
I am a firm believer that one of the most effective ways to feel good on the inside is to definitely look dapper on the outside. When you know you look good, you come out poised, polished and put together. This Look right here, was what I wore to Nairobi’s most anticipated and glamorous event, FHT 2018, held at the plush Zen Garden in March. Be the judge, and let me know if I did it for the culture and pulled it off.
