Picture this; having lunch one afternoon, outdoor with the beautiful sun shining against the backdrop of Mother Nature showing off her flourishing fauna right in front of you. While at it, the green view you are marveling at while enjoying your meal, is superbly maintained with greens built to the Professional Golf Association standards.
This my friends, is Bustani & Garden Restaurant, Karen Country Club, an outdoor garden restaurant set in a pristine, serene surrounding overlooking one of the most magnificent golf courses in the region. A large part of this 18-hole course was built on the former coffee estate developed by the Danish pioneer Karen Blixen, whose life and times were depicted in the lyrical film `Out of Africa`. Indeed, the shade trees from her coffee plantation still dominate parts of the golf course, eighty years after they were planted.
When you go to Bustani & Garden Restaurant, it’s the fresh air that first hits you as you walk in to the sight of the fragrant, sweet-smelling flowers: a treat for your senses which then invites you. Then it’s the chirping sounds of the birds and the tinkling of the wind that chimes as you take a minute to sit and enjoy your view.
The mood is just perfect for a scrumptious meal and as one Virginia Woolf once said ‘One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.’’ On this particular day, my 3 course meal consisted of an appetizer namely nicoise salad (tuna, tomatoes, eggs, lettuce, French beans, potato, anchovies), main course namely beef tornado, basil, cheese mash potatoes and truffle jus and last but not least, the dessert which was banana foster with cinnamon ice-cream. Fancy huh? Absolutely delicious.
The al carte menu has a wide selection consisting of appetizers, salads, soups to fish/ seas food, poultry/ chicken, pizza, pasta, desserts and not forgetting their kitchen/ chef specialties. Meanwhile, I love the fact that when it comes to service, being a regular, they know me by name, which makes me really feel at home. It is one simple gesture that we take for granted.
I must point out, that this is a private members club so unless you are a member, you will not be able to access the restaurant. If your friend is a member of the club, he or she can invite you over for a visit. Bustani views are simply breathtaking.
Location; Karen Country Club, one of Kenya’s leading golf and private members club, and is a family oriented club founded in 1937 and prides itself in being one of the oldest golf clubs in Kenya.
