When was the last time you took a moment to reflect on your life? Do you ever take a moment to just look back at how far you have come or are you so busy trying to pursue your career/ marriage/ business that you barely take a moment to slow down and be at one with your thoughts? One of the things I like to do and share is what I call, my moment of truth and reflection. I like to look back and share some nuggets on what keeps me going and has, over the years. These reflections are my moments of truth: my enablers that help me, be the best version of myself (and probably yours).
Let’s talk about self-love, which is my moment of truth and reflection today. What is self-love to you? Have you embraced it? Is it something you think about? Are you even aware of it? Self-love is one of the best things that has guided me throughout my life. I will explain this in my own understanding and hope it makes sense to you like it has for me, and I hope one day you embrace it if you haven’t.
Self-love first and foremost, is waking up every day and getting ready to face the world with a new attitude and renewed hope no matter what life threw at you the previous day. It is getting up and embracing a positive attitude towards yourself and what’s in store ahead for the day.
It is looking in the mirror, being kind to yourself and loving what you see, no matter the scars that life throws at you because surely tough times don’t last. Life has taught me that if I am alive and still standing, I, VinieO, am worthy of every second that I breathe. Self-love is the greatest relationship you can have with yourself first thing in the morning.
Self-love is knowing and appreciating that you are work in progress, that you always have the chance to improve yourself and become something if not, someone better than who you already are. This takes a whole load off your chest when you feel down and wondering what next. Failures can knock you out (oh boy, they really can), but the moment you take a step back and reflect and not let failure define you as tough as that sometimes may be, I promise you the great feeling of self-love will propel you to rise up and go try again and again. It allows you the ability to be comfortable with making mistakes just like any human being does, but you have to work actively to be better. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Learn to walk away from people (family/ friends/ colleagues) and situations that threaten your peace of mind, your values and above all, your mental health. Do not sacrifice your well being to please the world. Someone once said, “You’ll be in better company once you stop adjusting your boundaries to accommodate disrespect.” HALLELUYAH! Isn’t this what self-love is about? Listen, over the years, I have learnt that it really bothers people when you’re comfortable with who you are. Don’t let any one out there troll you for the things that make you unique and lovable and simply who you are. If we all were the same, the world would be a pretty dull place. So ignore, live and laugh out loud. You do not need their approval to be YOU!
The reason you see me (VinieO) doing things that I love and care about, without stressing what some people think about me, is because I am 100 % comfortable with who I am in my ways- character, dressing, personality, career, who I choose to love etc and that my friends, is self love. When you learn to set boundaries jealously and unapologetically with whom you allow in your life and space, that right there is self-love.
When all is said and done, self-love will remind you of how valuable you are, how far you’ve come. No one knows the sacrifices you have made or even the ups and downs you have endured to get to this phase of your life. I live with a purpose and design to do the things that I want to accomplish and to make me happy. My advice for you is to make your relationship with yourself the strongest and as unshakable as you can because you never want to give anyone else the ability to make you question yourself. Treat the relationship you have with yourself with the same kindness, and love that you have for others.
Be cognizant of the fact that every day, you have to make it a mission to check in with yourself so that you are aware of how you are doing- Just imagine that. How awesome is that? Only you know and understand this. It is called self-love. In the words of Rupi Kaur, “the universe took its time on you, crafted you to offer the world something different from everyone else. When you doubt how you were created, you doubt an energy greater than us both.” Please read those lines again out loud. My God! How powerful are those words? Read that, that is in quotes again.
Happy birthday to me. May good health, love, kindness, and joy follow me all the days of my life. I leave you with these words, “This Life is fragile. Take as many pictures and videos as you want. Document each and every moment just for you because you’ll never know how much you will cherish them one day.”
