The year 2020- what was that? The worrying, uncertainty, and changes that we faced really threw our lives upside down. Like someone said, “2020 being a tough year, was the understatement of 2020.” But if you are reading this, I want you to take a minute and just say thank you to the almighty for making it this far- Happy New Year. If there is a big lesson 2020 taught us, its definitely that of gratitude every single day we are alive. As ‘cliché’ as this may sound, start or end each day by acknowledging one thing you’re grateful for. With a little practice, you may even become more aware of all the positive things around you that you have and this in turn will fuel your inner spirit to keep going.
Life is so unbearably short. Today you are here, tomorrow you are gone. We think we have all the time to do all the things we want, but we never know when this will be cut short. I wish I had all the answers. I wish I could tell you that everything is going to go back to normal soon enough, but I can’t. On the flip side, you know what I can tell you for a fact? You need to start being active in doing things that fulfill your life and bring a smile to your face this new year. Yes, even in the midst of uncertainties, we are all uniquely created and have things that bring us joy but it so happens that we tend to deny ourselves these things, saying “ohhh one day I shall, ohh one day I will”, yet that one day may never come. Are you still denying yourself that opportunity to travel, to confess to your crush/ love again? Or to buy yourself an outfit or maybe to enjoy that drink you have been keeping in the cabinet?
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am here to tell you to stop waiting for “special occasions” to permit you to enjoy and celebrate life. Start to actively enjoy the good things you are fortunate to have and have access to. This is the year to just live- go wear that lovely outfit, take pics of it and simply glow in it. It does not require you to break the bank. I do this for me, simply to celebrate my journey and remind myself having come this far in life and because to be honest, I am unapologetically my number one cheerleader without a doubt. Also it’s another way of not waiting for that special occasion in order to wear something.
Every day/week/month is a special occasion. You simply have to create it. Hasn’t 2020 taught you enough lessons? Treat yourself to lunch /brunch at your favorite restaurant, go for a staycation/ holiday destination, because you truly deserve it.
In the same breath, create a bucket list and start ticking things off. Know what you want to achieve for each stretch of your life, and do what you can. It’s better to have tried to do something than live in fear or regret of not having done it. I want you to go out there and live this life. Yes you can plan for the future but honestly don’t sacrifice all of the present. Find a way to enjoy life as you work towards bigger and better things.
When all is said and done, value your time, efforts and input and life. Make yourself and your life a priority. Curve out some time to do things that propel yourself forward in life and create what you deserve and desire and in the process please pamper and spoil yourself. Don’t put your life on auto-pilot – live. Just live. It does not take that much to live your life to the fullest.
As Maya Angelou once said, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” Happy new year and may it remind us how magical it is to be alive.
